Fantastic Toiles Film Review

Mid-last year, Fantastic Toiles took to SHOWstudio for their April popup. Soon after, whispers emerged of a Nick Knight-directed Fantastic Toiles film. Finally, almost a year later, the film is free to watch on the SHOWstudio website.

Fantastic Toiles is a team of indie designers transforming fashion with DIY principles. Nasir Mazhar founded the group in 2019. It seeks to give talents control over making and sharing their work, allowing them to avoid wholesale obstacles and ensuring that designers receive fair pay for their work.

Nick Knight, a British "image-maker," founded SHOWstudio and holds significant influence in global photography. Aged 64, Knight has won many awards, including the prestigious Isabella Blow Award and a CBE from King Charles. Knight's exceptional photography is just one aspect of his multifaceted career. He has also made significant contributions to various exhibitions and has an extensive collection of short films.

The film highlights classic Knight techniques with a unique style, setting it apart from those of other filmmakers. All the garments for the film were made by members of Fantastic Toiles, placing them at the forefront since the film lacks a plot and acting, functioning primarily as a fashion film.

However, upon viewing, the lack of collective input in the film itself becomes evident, failing to capture the DIY spirit of Fantastic Toiles. Instead, it reflects the grandeur and refinement typical of Knight's collaborations with large fashion houses.

While the visuals are impressive, as expected from a director of Knight's stature, the film itself feels lacking in heart. On a positive note, it's remarkable to see independent designers showcased on such a prominent platform, especially considering that SHOWstudio financed the entire film themselves.
