From Yemen to Sheffield, Kazna asker makes her mark on London once again
On Sunday morning, Kazna Asker presented her London Fashion Week showcase at the Old Selfridges Hotel. The showcase was entitled "What Are We Fighting For" and transported viewers back to Yemen, where Kazna's parents grew up. Highlights included the henna by Huqthat, Yemeni snacks, and, of course, the clothes themselves.
Kazna is a fashion designer from Sheffield who combines the northern culture she has grown up around with her Yemeni heritage. Often compared to her subversive tracksuit predecessors, such as Martine Rose and Nasir Mazhar, Kazna brings her own flair with her usage of traditional Yemeni patterns and Islamic silhouettes. One of Kazna's Central Saint Martin’s teachers, she stays true to her roots while infusing her designs with a unique blend of cultural influences.
The collection was characteristic of Kazna’s previous work but this time with more color, such as a bright blue womenswear offering and the models’ bright gold adornments.
Kazna’s presentations are unlike any other in the way they overwhelmingly transport the viewer to Yemen, through the tea, rugs from her grandma's living room, and even the playlist, put together by her brother, Manny.
All eyes were on Kazna, with everyone from fashion industry veterans Sarah Mower and Berni Yates to relative newcomer Yaku Stapleton in attendance.
Kazna Asker's showcase at London Fashion Week was more than just a display of fashion; it was a cultural immersion that heavily resonated with the audience. From the henna to the Yemeni snacks, every detail was meticulously curated to honor her rich heritage. This collection, while echoing the subversive spirit of her tracksuit predecessors, was undeniably Kazna's voice—speaking in the vivid hues of Sheffield's northern culture and the intricate patterns of Yemeni tradition. With industry icons and fresh faces alike turning their attention to her, Kazna is sure to go far, and it’s only a matter of time until the world starts taking notice.
